Learn more ↗Ethics & Scope of Practice
Ethical practice is what separates peer support from everything adjacent to it. The standards below are set by the certifying board and by the programs peers work within — not by MAPS.
Code of Ethics
The ethical code certified peers are held to — confidentiality, boundaries, dual relationships, and conduct in the field. This is the authoritative version; read it directly rather than relying on a summary.
Read the code ↗Where the Peer Role Ends
Peer support is built on shared experience, not clinical authority. Peers do not diagnose, do not prescribe, do not provide therapy, and do not give legal advice. Knowing where the role ends protects both the peer and the person they support.
Confidentiality & Mandatory Reporting
What a peer is told is generally confidential — but confidentiality is not absolute. Immediate danger and mandatory-reporting obligations override it. Your employer's policy and applicable law govern; confirm both before you are in the moment.
Ethics Quick-Reference
A pocket-sized boundary and confidentiality summary, plus a scope-of-practice one-pager, are being prepared for download.
See downloads ↓What MAPS is not. MAPS is not a union, not a certifying or credentialing body, and does not provide legal advice. Nothing on this page certifies anyone, confers a credential, or substitutes for guidance from the certifying board, an attorney, or your employer.
